revisiting "LINT" - a very unique album

REVISITING "LINT"
A TRACK-BY-TRACK BREAKDOWN
ORIGINAL 2008 CD IS OUT OF PRINT
In early 2008 I moved my home studio out of the living room and into a side room. A month or two later I moved it back into the living room and this unique album was the only record to come out of the short time in that side room. The entire album was written, recorded, and produced in roughly two weeks time. It contains 10 songs that are all completely different in nature. There's a little bit of something for everyone on this with rock, techno rock, alternative, punk, country, acoustic, and even a Christian song! When I put it out most of my fans expressed distaste with it, but as usual there were also those who praised it. It has always been one of my favorites, I call it my little "white album" due to it's diversity of tunes.
STREAMING TRACKS COMING SOON!

1 THE REFINERY OF LOVE
Vocals, Back Up Vocals, Bass, Guitars, MC-909 and 808 Programming
The lyrics for this song come from a rock opera called Letters To Pamela which I never released. The idea comes from a time when I was driving along the coast up by Santa Cruz and got stuck in traffic right in front of this huge refinery plant. While I waited for the traffic to let up, I was just staring at this huge plant and it's smoke stacks and thought how nice it would be if instead of spewing out industrial waste, it would spew out love instead.

2 CAN'T WAIT FOR FRIDAY NIGHT
Vocals, Back-Up Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Linear Drum Programming, Keyboards
The music for this song was already recorded, left over from The Blue Door album but I had never done anything else with it. So it has that hard rock sound that was prevalent on The Blue Door. The lyrics for the verses come from the unreleased rock opera Letters To Pamela and the lyrics for the chorus were written in the studio. I added the keyboard parts at the last minute before mixing.

3 I'M ON MY WAY TO HEAVEN
Vocals, Back-Up Vocals, Bass, Electric & Acoustic Guitars, Slide, Yamaha Digital Grand Piano, MC-808 Programming
I wrote this Christian song in 1996 and never recorded it until working on this album. The whole thing was done fresh in the new side room studio and of all the songs on this album the most overall time was spent on this one. I have always maintained that someday this song will be picked up by a Christian artist and recorded and after the release of Lint I spent a couple weeks doing nothing but shopping it around to Christian labels. The song also contains 4 different tracked guitar parts including dual slide and a solo.

4 MAINSTREAM
Vocals, Back-Up Vocals, Casio Toy Single Drum Preset
Easily the silliest song on the album, the music for this was simply a preset on an old Casio toy drum I found laying around. I doctored up the sound with lots of EQ and mastering to give it a more professional sound. The lyrics were written in the studio and are quite simply about not wanting to be part of the mainstream.

5 AIN'T GOT NOBODY TO VOTE FOR
Vocals, Back-Up Vocals, Electric and Acoustic Guitars, Slide
Bass- Roger
Drums - JB
The music for this song was a leftover bass and drum track from the IDENTITY album. I built the track from there adding guitars and vocals. The lead vocals were completely improvised in the studio on a first and only take and in retrospect I wish I would have spent more time on it while keeping the improvisation as I was a little loosy-goosy at the time. The song expresses my discontent at what was then the field of 2008 presidential candidates.

6 PASSED ME BY
Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Keyboards, Alesis Drum Programming
Another very different song, the lyrics for this are also from the previously mentioned rock opera and the music was done fresh in the studio. The song is autobiographical and is basically about looking back on key areas of my life that I felt at the time "passed me by."

7 CELEBRATING THE GOOD IN ME
Vocals, Acoustic & Electric Guitars, Slide, Bass, MC-909 Programming
Probably the very best song on the entire album, overall quality wise, and has always been a personal favorite of mine. The lyrics are actually a poem that was written by a potential long-distance girlfriend who wrote the poem for me and said that I could do anything I wanted with it after I said it would make a great song. My vocals on this are some of my best ever and I'm also very proud of the slide work.

8 THE DREAM
Vocals, Guitars, Line 6 Effects, MC 909 and 808 Programming
The lyrics from this are also from Letters To Pamela and form the heart of that rock opera. The music was done fresh in the studio and I used a brand new Line 6 effects unit I had just purchased for the guitar parts. The song was redone in a major way for the Redefining The Remix album and while that version is far better, this version has a nice stripped-down quality to it.

9 TWILIGHT STAR
Vocals, Guitars, Bass, MC-808 Drum Programming
This is a re-do of a song I wrote way back in 1990. An Iggy Pop kind of rocker using the analogy of a twilight star with the girl of affection.

10 THE GIRL WITH THE BROKEN WING
Vocals, Acoustic Guitars, Slide Guitar, Bass
The album ends with this sweet acoustic number that is another favorite of mine, especially since I've never really done anything like it. The dual acoustic parts form the main musical foundation and the song is about a woman I was in a long-term relationship with who suffered from depression. She is metaphorically represented as a bird that I saw one day while walking the beach in Malibu that was lying in the sand next to the shore with a broken wing.
